Master's Degree Programme in Information and Communication Technology

Study objectives

The Master’s Degree Programme in Information and Communication Technology provides versatile and high quality ICT education in selected fields of ICT, with an established reputation in innovative interdisciplinary and international education. The programme has international double-degree collaboration with the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Master School and with the Fudan University in Shanghai, China. In the academic year 2021-2022, the programme offers four specialisation tracks:

  • Cyber Security
  • Smart Systems
  • Digital Health
  • Cryptography

The Cyber Security specialisation track gives its students profound and substantial education and expertise in the field of security and technology for networked systems. The focus is on researching cyber security technologies for networked systems and applications of the communication-intensive future. The technological topics covered include security of smart environments, system and network security, security of communication systems and applications, and designing secure systems. Students will explore both technological and theoretical scientific advances in the field and apply them to practice. The graduates will have strong technological, theoretical and practical understanding in cyber security. With their new knowledge and skills the graduates can proceed to building a successful career in securing the information and communication technology industry.

The Smart Systems specialisation track provides a competitive skillset and profound knowledge in the highly relevant field of Internet of Things (IoT) based smart and autonomous embedded systems, with the main application areas in mobile robotic systems and smart environments. The major prepares its students for challenging software and hardware oriented research and development tasks on embedded intelligent systems in industry, society and academia. Graduates’ employment prospects are excellent in Finland, in Europe and globally. A student can tailor the orientation of his/her studies toward a hardware or software emphasis by elective studies in both major and minor subjects.

The Digital Health specialisation track offers extensive training ranging from molecular level interactions to individuals and society. Digital health contains two sub-tracks, allowing students to choose in which area they want to specialize. The specialization areas are Medical Analytics and Health Internet-of-Things and Bioinformatics. The students graduating from Digital Health will have acquired scientific and analytical skills, expertise in present theories and up-to-date technologies, as well as practical skills including teamwork, leadership, and interpersonal skills in an international environment. The acquired methodological skills and advanced knowledge allow the students to continue their career paths in academia or industry.

The Cryptography specialisation track focuses on cryptography research. The goal of this specialization is to educate future experts with a strong and broad knowledge of mathematical aspects of cryptography and data security to the field of research and ICT sector.

Study contents

The cyber security specialisation track focuses on security technologies for networked systems and applications of the communication-intensive future based on research. The technological topics covered include system and network security, security of communication systems and applications, and security in system design. The education is based on current cyber security research and also includes hands-on modules on state-of-the art vendor systems from our industrial partners. Students gain profound and substantial education and expertise in the field of secure networked systems. The topic is approached in a multi-disciplinary fashion with compulsory studies also on cryptographic and management aspects of cyber security.

The Smart Systems specialisation track covers the key concepts, technologies and methods needed in design of smart and autonomous networked systems. These include e.g. Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, energy efficient embedded and distributed computing platforms, edge and fog computing paradigms, intelligent multi-agent system concepts, as well as relevant software and hardware design methods. The content has a close connection with recent research in the field. The theoretical content is augmented with practical exercises in e.g. robotic and autonomous applications.

The Digital health specialisation track integrates skills and principles from computer science, embedded systems and medical sciences in order to build understanding of theory and to gain practical competences in the field. Digital Health covers two subspecializations, each with their different study content. Medical Analytics and Health IoT has a strong focus on data analytics, while at the same time leveraging from machine learning, software engineering and embedded systems, it contains interdisciplinary collaboration between information technology and health sciences. Bioinformatics focuses on analyses of biomedical data, such as DNAs and proteins, full genome sequences, and gene expression levels.

In the Cryptography specialisation track modern symmetric and asymmetric cryptography algorithms and protocols are studied and analysed from the mathematical point of view. The students learn to assess the strengths and weaknesses of cryptographic solutions based on a deep understanding of the underlying theory. The students also gain the ability to pursue applying cryptographic algorithms and protocols for real-life environments. The topic is approached in a multi-disciplinary fashion with obligatory studies also on security of networked systems and management aspects of information security.
